QUANT TRADING & ASYMMETRIC GLOSSARY

Institutional definitions, mathematical formulas, and execution rationale.

Asymmetry Score (1–100) Composite Quantitative Metric
A proprietary composite quantitative rating evaluating the asymmetry of a trade setup. An asymmetric trade is one where potential upside (3x to 5x+) vastly exceeds the mathematically defined downside risk. Stocks scoring 80+ possess both hard balance-sheet downside backstops (e.g. trading near net cash) and near-term binary or clinical catalysts with major market TAM.
Graham Net Current Asset Value (NCAV) Cash Floor Balance-Sheet Protection
NCAV per Share = (Cash & Cash Equivalents + Short-Term Investments - Total Liabilities) / Shares Outstanding
Derived from Benjamin Graham's net-net liquidation formula. If a stock trades near or below its NCAV, the company's enterprise operations, clinical intellectual property, pipeline, and patents are valued by the market at essentially zero or less. This provides a hard liquidation backstop that severely constrains downside risk.
Expected Value (EV) Probability & Expectancy
Expected Value = (Probability of Win × Net Profit on Win) - (Probability of Loss × Net Loss on Failure)
Expected Value (EV) measures the mathematical expectation of gain per share over repeated trials. A positive EV confirms that favorable upside multiples mathematically overcome the risk of a zero or drawdown on negative binary catalysts.
Quarter-Kelly Position Sizing Risk & Bankroll Management
Kelly % = (p × b - q) / b   |   Quarter-Kelly = Kelly % × 0.25
The Kelly Criterion calculates the mathematically optimal percentage of total capital to allocate to maximize long-term logarithmic portfolio growth. Full Kelly is notorious for extreme drawdowns (often 50%+). Institutional desks use Quarter-Kelly (0.25f*) to capture ~80% of optimal growth while eliminating more than 75% of peak-to-trough volatility and preventing risk-of-ruin.
Stock Price vs. NCAV Cash Floor vs. Enterprise Value (EV) Fundamental Valuation Relationship
Stock Price = Cash-Per-Share (NCAV) + Enterprise Value per Share   |   Downside to Cash = (Price - NCAV) / Price
Understanding how the market prices a company:
  • Current Stock Price ($P): What you pay right now on the open market (e.g., $13.26).
  • Graham NCAV Cash Floor: The net liquid cash per share if all debts are settled today (e.g., $2.45/sh).
  • Enterprise Value (EV): The premium above cash the market assigns to the operating business, patents, and team. For a stock at $13.26 with $2.45 in cash, EV is $10.81/share. Downside to the cash backstop is -81.5%.
  • Asymmetry Principle: When a stock trades at $3.50 with a $3.20 cash floor, downside to cash is only -8.5%, giving almost free upside optionality. Conversely, when a stock trades at 5x its cash floor, it is a Speculative Growth setup, not a deep-value cash-floor play!
Asymmetry Score 5-Tier Action Guide Strict Anti-Inflation Rubric
85–100 (Elite Institutional Alpha): Rare setup (<5% of market). Price/NCAV ≤ 1.8x (downside to cash <45%), funded >18 months, Tier-1 clinical/operational catalyst within 6 months, and 3:1+ payoff. Highest conviction.
70–84 (Favorable Asymmetry): Quality asymmetric risk/reward. Sound balance sheet, clearly defined catalyst runway, and sensible valuation multiple.
50–69 (Speculative Growth / Symmetric Risk): High upside potential, but valuation is dominated by Enterprise Value expectations (Price/NCAV > 3.5x, downside to cash >60%). Normal market risk.
30–49 (Fragile / Dilution Clock): Cash runway <12 months, looming secondary offering, or vulnerable capital structure. High risk of capital destruction before catalyst.
0–29 (Toxic / Capital Destruction): Active death-spiral convertibles, <4 months of cash, negative NCAV, or imminent delisting/bankruptcy. Avoid or short bias.
Hard-to-Borrow (HTB) & Float Dynamics Short Squeeze Mechanics
Indicates that shares available for short sellers are severely constrained at prime brokers, often carrying borrow fees in excess of 20% to 100%+ APR. When an HTB stock with a concentrated institutional or insider float experiences an unanticipated positive catalyst, short sellers are forced into rapid covering, causing a parabolic gamma and liquidity squeeze.
The 5 Multi-Pathway Strategy Framework Execution Structuring
Pathway A (Outright Common): Best when option spreads are wide, open interest is illiquid, or share price is under $5. Risk anchored to NCAV floor.
Pathway B (Asymmetric Long LEAPs): Long-dated call options (6–18 months out) bought when Implied Volatility (IV) is low. Provides 100x asymmetric upside leverage with defined downside capped at premium paid.
Pathway C (Bull Call Debit Spreads): Simultaneous purchase of an ATM call and sale of an OTM call. Capped upside, but slashes net cash outlay and neutralizes catastrophic post-catalyst IV crush.
Pathway D (Below-Cash Cash-Secured Puts): Selling puts at strikes at or below the Graham NCAV cash floor. Captures large annualized option premiums or allows synthetic stock acquisition at a massive discount to liquid cash assets.
Pathway E (IV Expansion Run-Up): Initiating positions 30–60 days before a scheduled binary announcement to ride institutional speculative front-running and IV expansion, exiting prior to data release.
